Police fire when order to put down weapon ignored.
One person was fatally shot by Merced police after a disturbance reported during a party at a home in the 1500 block of Buckingham Court, off Nottingham Lane in North Merced shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday.
The coroner's office has identified the person who was fatally shot as Vang Thao, 21, of Merced.
Two others were injured, including one found in the home with bullet wounds to the leg, according to Police Chief Norm Andrade. No officers were hurt.
Two officers responded to the scene. As they approached the home, they saw and heard what appeared to be an argument between two men, Lt. Andre Matthews said.
The officers reported hearing the sound of a handgun being prepared for firing. The officers saw one of the men holding a gun and ordered him to drop it. Instead, the man pointed the gun at the officers, who then fired.
One man was killed and another suffered a leg wound.
It's unclear whether it was the gunman who suffered the fatal injury.
The Merced County Sheriff's SWAT Team also responded to the scene. Sheriff Mark Pazin said one person at the scene was bitten by a dog with the department's K9 unit and taken into custody after he refused to comply with the deputy's orders.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as part of standard protocol, Matthews said.
