By Richard Wanglue. Independent Day July 4, 2010 marked 30 years Anniversary of the Hmong Freedom Celebration and Annual Sports Tournament event in St. Paul, Minnesota also known as Hmong July 4th in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Ka Houa Yang, President of Lao Family Community in Minnesota, said that there were about six Hmong families lived in Minnesota during 1977. On Independent Day, they gathered and came up an idea to have a picnic for the families to come together and played soccer to remember those that left behind. “1980 was the year they officially started this event…” said Ka Houa Yang.
