Candlelight vigil planned for Vang Pao in Green Bay, Wisconsin Jan 9, 2011 at 4 PM
A candlelight vigil for Hmong leader Vang Pao, 81, is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the United Hmong Community Center, 401 Ninth St.
Pao, a revered former general in the Royal Army of Laos who helped lead Hmong refugees to a new home in America after the Vietnam War, died Thursday night in Clovis, Calif., following a battle with pneumonia.
The general led Hmong guerrillas in their
CIA-backed battle against communists during the Vietnam War. He was credited with resettling tens of thousands of Hmong from Laos into cities like Fresno, Calif., St. Paul, Minn., and Milwaukee.
